Three deductions, not one conversion
A currency converter tells you what $500 is in shillings. It does not tell you what actually lands in a Ugandan landlord's hand, because a real transfer loses money twice more after the conversion: once to whatever service moved it, and again if it is cashed out of a mobile money wallet rather than banked directly. This tool runs all three steps in order and shows each one on purpose: the number to trust is the last one, not the first.
Why the rate shown is not the rate you will get
The rate this page fetches on load is a mid-market reference rate, the rate banks quote each other, not the rate any consumer service offers. Every remittance provider builds a margin into their own rate, so the figure here is a ceiling, not a promise. Replace it with whatever your provider actually quoted before you rely on the result; the field is editable for exactly that reason.
Why the cash-out fee sometimes disappears
The mobile money cash-out step reuses the same fee bands as the mobile money fee checker, so the two tools can never quote different figures for the same withdrawal. MTN's own published tariff table has no row above UGX 5,000,000, so there is simply no fee it publishes for a cash-out that large. When an amount falls outside the table this tool says so directly rather than reporting zero, because zero would read as "free" when the true answer is "unpublished."
What this figure does and does not include
It covers a transfer fee (flat or percentage, whichever the sender was charged) and one mobile money cash-out. It does not include any fee the source-country bank charges before the money leaves, and it does not account for a transfer that lands directly in a Ugandan bank account rather than a mobile money wallet. That path has no cash-out fee at all.

How much does it cost to send money for rent to Uganda?
It depends on the transfer service and how the money is collected in Uganda. A bank or remittance transfer fee is one cost; cashing the wallet out through an MTN agent is a separate cost with its own fee band and a 0.5% excise duty on the value withdrawn.
Does mobile money charge a fee to receive money for rent?
Receiving into the wallet is free. The fee applies when the money is cashed out (at an agent, at an ATM, or pushed to a bank), and MTN's published fee table has no row above UGX 5,000,000, so a large remittance can fall outside it entirely.
What exchange rate should I use to plan a rent transfer?
